v interviewVirtual interviews are on the rise. They are a simple and flexible way for clients to interview candidates from almost anywhere there is an Internet connection. Here are answers to four of the top questions about interviewing online.

Q. What types of tools are available for conducting virtual interviews?

A. Whether you use a basic service or more advanced tool with all of the bells-and-whistles, there are plenty of options from which to choose when conducting a virtual interview. Anyone with a webcam and Internet connection can use a service like Google Hangouts, FaceTime, and Skype. They are all simple, easy to use, and free. Companies wanting to invest in a virtual platform can check out a service such as Interview4, Montage, or InterviewStream. Regardless of the platform, it’s a good idea to do a quick test prior to each appointment.

Q. How can I become more comfortable conducting virtual interviews?

A. If you’ve always interviewed by phone, the idea of a video interview may make you feel a little wary. Many people don’t like the idea of speaking in front of a camera. Consider running a few practice sessions with a colleague so you can get used to adjusting the camera and finding the right volume. Be sure to speak loudly and clearly into the microphone.

Q.  Does it matter where I conduct a virtual interview?

A.  It’s your interview, so it’s best to find a place where you won’t have to deal with any distractions. With so many people working from home, it’s important to eliminate potential issues such as poor lighting, barking dogs or crying children in the background. If you are conducting the interview from home, you still need to dress professionally.

Q.  Are there any potential issues I should look out for?

A.  Virtual interviews may feel more relaxed than in-person interviews, but they should still follow the same process. Make sure you download any required software in advance. Even if you perform a trial run ahead of time, there is always a chance that there will be technical issues. Be prepared–you may need to reconnect, especially if you have a weak signal.

The virtual interview format allows you to broaden your reach into the talent pool while also getting an idea of how comfortable the interviewee is with technology. With a little practice, it may end up your favorite way to find new hires.
